Altiscale is now part of SAP

I am excited to announce that Altiscale has joined forces with SAP.

Altiscale and SAP share a unifying vision: helping customers create business value by harnessing the flood of data generated by the connected world. In combination, our global resources and deep talent pool will help accelerate our shared vision of a Big Data future. SAP started as an applications company, moved into data warehousing and analytics, and, when we met, was already moving towards a Big Data technology core. Altiscale started as a Big Data technology platform, had moved towards data warehousing and analytics, and saw a future in applications. This was a shared vision, approached from two different ends. Together, we can provide powerful end-to-end solutions to our customers.

Altiscale founding vision

When Altiscale was founded in 2012, we had a unique focus on Big Data success. We didn’t want to be yet another provider pushing technology into the marketplace. We wanted our customers to achieve real business value from Big Data, in production, at scale.

When we looked around at Big Data efforts at that time, we saw a lot of thrash and struggle. To make our customers truly successful required a new approach: building operational excellence directly into our offering. In order to do this, we built a cloud service that delivered a fast, scalable, reliable, and secure Hadoop and Spark platform. Then we backed that platform with a uniquely talented squad of customer-focused Hadoop operations experts, armed with tools that allowed them to provide excellent service and support to a wide range of customers.

At the time, Hadoop was still considered risky and nascent, and Spark wasn’t on people’s radars.  “Cloud” was still a fearful word to many enterprises, and it was not well understood how important operations is to real Big Data success.  The world has changed substantially.  Today, Hadoop is embraced as a de facto Big Data standard, and Spark is widely recognized as a valuable complement to Hadoop. As for the cloud, some of the largest companies in the world, in industries such as financial services, healthcare, and manufacturing, recognize the cloud as the future of their technology stack. And more companies are realizing that the horizontal scaling and extreme peak-to-trough demands found in Big Data workloads require the operational excellence and elasticity that can only be found in a cloud-based solution.

Finding the ideal partner in SAP

In terms of product success, customer wins, and recognition and respect from press and analysts, Altiscale has created significant momentum in a short amount of time. I am proud of what we have accomplished, and those accomplishments sparked a fortuitous series of conversations with SAP. Through those conversations, it became clear that we shared both a similar vision of Big Data and a passion for customer success. SAP has established deep, trusted relationships with the Global 2000 and beyond. SAP’s innovation with HANA, Vora, and the Hana Cloud Platform has led to successful customer outcomes. The opportunity to complete the vision by adding fully managed Hadoop and Spark in the cloud was just too powerful to pass up for both companies. We found in each other an ideal partner.

In addition to being a business unit at SAP, Altiscale will work across SAP solutions and family of companies to help drive data and platform strategy. The Altiscale team has worked hard to deliver on the vision of a powerful, reliable Big Data cloud, and we look forward to those talents continuing to be put to good use at SAP, expanding on the original Altiscale vision and supporting existing and new customers.

The Altiscale team would also like to thank all of our customers and partners for their enthusiastic support. I am proud of what we have accomplished together, and I look forward to the great things that we will do next.
